The Annual BSN Model UN (BSNMUN) Conference was hosted at Senior School Voorschoten on Saturday, 15 December.
Thanks to the enormous dedication of the two Year 13 students organising the event, as well as the other key BSNMUN society members, the conference was a great success. Over 60 students from the BSN participated, including the senior team members, 20 delegates and 20 admin staff. In addition, the BSN was happy to host over 20 students from the International School of the Hague and the American School of the Hague.
The conference structure mirrored that of the UN, with students participating on committees such as the Security Council, ECOSOC, General Assembly 1 and the Environmental Committee. Similarly, students discussed topics that are current themes from the UN, under the umbrella of “the challenges of social justice and equality in a divided world”. Delegates lobbied for support on their country’s proposed resolutions and amendments, questioned one another’s points of view, and ultimately voted on resolutions.
During the conference, we asked students to share how being involved in Model UN changed their worldview:
It’s hard to put aside your own bias and beliefs but it’s such a good skill to have to be able to put yourself in someone else’s experience and look at issues from their point of view.
I do so much research before a MUN conference - it’s made me much more aware of global politics and the big issues and conflicts going on in other parts of the world, and how they affect other people
Thank you to all the students involved in organising and participating in this year’s BSNMUN, as well as the teachers and staff members who help make this outstanding opportunity possible for students.
