Your child will confidently develop through active learning, play, and exploration of the British Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework.

Both years in the Foundation Stage are based on a specialist Early Years Curriculum and made up of seven key developmental areas:

Personal, Social and Emotional

Our school environment encourages personal and social skills through forming relationships with others.

It supports the development of skills and positive attitudes that enable children to develop a strong sense of self-worth.

Our aim is for children to become valued members of the class and to develop social skills, such as turn-taking, sharing and independence.

Communication and Language

Children are encouraged to communicate with one another and develop their vocabulary and their skills in talking, listening, and expressing themselves in a wide range of situations. Children are also encouraged to listen to the thoughts and ideas of others.

At this stage, they are also introduced to the Dutch language.

We provide opportunities for all children to explore words and text in a range of contexts, including through stories, role-play and drama.

Physical Development

Physical Development provides opportunities for children to develop their confidence and skills in gross and fine motor movements.

Children are able to develop their physical capabilities through being active and interactive, developing their coordination, control, and movement.

We also support children in developing an understanding of how their bodies work and what they need to be healthy and safe.

Literacy

Literacy involves encouraging children to link sounds and letters to begin to read and write. It is important that these early skills and concepts are well established as they form the foundations for all later learning.

We support children in developing a range of skills and concepts that enable them to successfully learn to read and write.

We ensure the children have access to a range of books both fiction and non-fiction and are read to individually and in groups. Children are encouraged to make marks with a wide range of material such as chalk, paint, crayons, and pens and to begin to form letters when they are ready.

Mathematics

This area of learning provides opportunities for children to develop their understanding of number, measurement, pattern, shape, and space.

We provide an environment in which children can explore, enjoy, and learn about numbers and shapes.

Children explore Mathematics in their environment through a wide range of resources, for example:

  • water play
  • Sand
  • Pegboards
  • Beads
  • Dice games
  • Number songs
  • Puzzles
  • Shop role play
Understanding the World

This area of learning provides opportunities for children to solve problems, question, make decisions, experiment, predict, plan, and explore, to find out about their environment.

By engaging with the world around them, children learn more about people, communities, and the world in which they live. Children also explore technology and how this impacts their everyday lives.

Expressive Arts and Design

This area of learning offers opportunities for children to explore and share their thoughts, ideas, and feelings through a variety of activities, including:

  • Art
  • Design and Technology,
  • Music
  • Movement
  • Dance
  • Imaginative and role-play activities

We provide opportunities to experiment with different resources and a range of activities which inspire their creativity.
