Physical education (PE), a practical-based subject, and sport-based Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs) have been skillfully adapted for remote and hybrid learning by Senior School Voorschoten’s (SSV) creative and energetic Sports team. From virtual fixtures to a medley of over 50 videos curated and crafted to engage students no matter their interest: senior school students have many good reasons to take a break from their desks and get active!
From Yoga to Parkour, SSV Sport encourages it all
Via our Senior School Voorschoten’s online learning platform, Canvas, PE students have access to over 50 videos (and counting!) and with topics such as yoga, dancing and strength-training. While sports-based CCAs have moved to Microsoft Teams, with fencing, calisthenics (necessary for students keen on urban activities such as parkour), and fitness proving to the activities of choice for the Spring Term.
By covering a wide variety of interests, the Sports Department aims to engage students’ intrinsic motivation for being active. And, for those students who thrive on competition, by completing activities they earn House points, helping move their House (Amsterdam, Leiden, The Hague and Delft) higher up the ranks.
Virtual Sports Fixtures
Splixtures (virtual fixtures) is a fantastic online initiative whereby students can compete with their peers within The British School in The Netherlands as well as other schools in a range of activities. To date, virtual sports fixtures have taken place in basketball, rugby, football and fitness challenges.
Microsoft Teams #BSNChallenge Accepted!
SSV students are all apart of a Microsoft Teams called ‘BSN Challenges’, where a Daily and Weekly Challenge are posted. These voluntary challenges are simple and possible to do at home with little (or no) equipment and focus on a different sport or activity each day. They’re a fun way of earning house points while getting out and enjoying the Spring sunshine.
Our daily, weekly and monthly challenges are now available on Teams. Monday’s challenge is to try and replicate Diego Maradona’s famous warm-up #bsnchallenges pic.twitter.com/BNB78twkgR

Whole Family Participation
Over the half-term holiday, SSV’s Sports Department initiated a Half-Term Climbing Challenge. Students, as well as their siblings and parents, where encouraged to participate through walking, cycling or running with the aim being to see who can climb the most cumulative meters during the break. Our #BSNCommunity had great fun, seeing who could ‘climb’ the highest:
Congratulations to one of our students who managed to climb over 1100 metres on a bike ride of less than twenty kilometres. Impressive feat, especially as this is The Netherlands, AND it was completed within a radius of 10km of the school!!!! #BSNHappyClimbers #outsideofthebox https://t.co/Omevy55Stj

Team Qhubeka ASSOS Announcement
Some of our sporty senior school students created this energetic short video announcing Team Qhubeka ASSOS 2021 Strade Bianche cycling team. Our students had great fun creating this video and are delighted to have been given the honours of the announcement for this multicultural team.
Some of our students had the privilege of reading out the @QhubekaAssos team for this weekend’s @StradeBianche in Tuscany! Good luck, we will be cheering you on from The Netherlands! #bicycleschangelives #ubuntu 🖐 https://t.co/JHU26xcszg
