With over 80 nationalities across all campuses, every day can be seen as an ‘international day’ at The British School in The Netherlands. However, it is important to celebrate what one is most proud of actively, and that is why in March every year, students and staff across our campuses wear clothes and share food and stories from the cultures that mean the most to them.
Cultural Quizzes
Junior School Diamanthorst’s (JSD) halls rang with songs and cheers from all over the world as all classes participated in an action-packed virtual assembly led by Assistant Headteacher Vicky van Assendelft. With a Kahoot quiz, presentations by class representatives and a dance competition, each class competed for the coveted ‘Golden Rugsack’, with the winners being a tie (for the first time in its illustrious history!).
Sustainability Projects around the World
The Year 6 Junior School Leidschenveen (JSL) International Ambassadors researched environmental sustainability projects from around the world and presented their findings virtually for class teachers to share during class assemblies. During 15-26 March, JSL has a sustainability focus for “Get STEAMed” (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics).
Cultural Food and Activities
On 26 March, Junior School Vlaskamp students will eat lunches influenced by their home country (or a country they are very interested in) and the lessons will be infused with cultural themed activities.
Diversity and Unity
Senior School Leidscheveen (SSL) Assistant Headteacher, Kevin Sandeman, led a virtual assembly reflecting on what unites all cultures: our shared humanity.
Difference is important and enriching, and so is recognising our essential unity.
Equality
The student-led ‘Equality Week’ at Senior School Voorschoten (SSV) began with a virtual assembly on LGBTQ+ and ended with International Day.
Brilliant assemblies delivered by our @BSNetherlands @BSNSixthForm students via @MicrosoftTeams to Year 12 and year 13 as part of our #Equality week Some delivered from school, some from home. Amazing and creative! pic.twitter.com/nSVd90A4XQ
