Junior School Vlaskamp celebrated Earth Week this week, getting students involved in activities and lessons based around things they can do to help make a positive impact on the environment.
The week kicked off with a guest speaker assembly and a focus on the danger of plastics to our environment, particularly in the oceans. One staff member spoke to the students on her family’s mission to live plastic-free. She shared some helpful tips and simple things students can do at home to decrease their own plastic usage, like picking reusable water bottles over of plastic ones and choosing healthy snacks that do not come covered in plastic wrap. Students are taking on the challenge of reducing plastic at school by bringing lunches without any plastic bags and no longer using plastic straws.

On Tuesday, volunteers from the World Wildlife Fund visited JSV to talk about their efforts to raise awareness of the environmental threats some animals face and talk about ways to help protect at-risk animals. Students had a blast taking part in the day’s activities, learning about different animals and why they are important to the ecosystem. The week came to an end with a non-uniform day on Wednesday and a chance for students to create displays on what they’ve been doing at home to be more environmentally-friendly and help reduce plastic usage.
