"Workplace for a Day" was an opportunity for year 8 students to get out of the classroom and learn about different types of jobs in The Hague and beyond.
The first BSN Y8 Workplace for a Day was a great success – with students getting unique opportunities to look behind the scenes at different industries, learn about the many types of jobs that make up a company and explore the wide range of careers paths within an industry.
Year 8 students were divided into five groups, and each group make two separate visits throughout the day. Designations included the Hotelschool The Hague, the Port of Rotterdam, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, Octatube, Shell, an Agri Experience Farm and Schiphol Airport.
Not only did students learn about different places of work that could be available to them, they were also given an impression of the many and extremely varied types of jobs within each company. For instance, at the OPCW, students learned not only about diplomatic and technical positions, but also about the IT, Legal, Human Resources, Communications and other support staff that help the organisation achieve its mission. They were also given insight into the academic and professional paths the speakers took to get to their position, as well as skills they learn in school that they can develop to help them in their future careers.
“It was helpful to learn about the skills it takes to be in this career, and how you can develop every day and improve yourself. It was also helpful to learn about the steps it takes to get into a career – some people have lots of degrees and some don’t, and it’s interesting to see how they got to their positions today.”
Thank you to the Career Education and Guidance department at Senior School Voorschoten for organising these trips, as well as to all of the hosts for sharing their insight and experience with our students!
