Senior School Event

Now in its second year, Equality Week at SSV is a chance for students to raise awareness and begin conversations with their classmates about issues in society that are important to them.

From 7-14 March, students at SSV marked each day with a different theme that covered issues pertaining to social, environmental and health related problems or opportunities for improving the world we live in. Students were the driving force for this week – deciding on the focus topics, leading discussions and coming up with a plan to get their classmates and teachers involved each day.

The week kicked off with a conversation on equality through respect – featuring a talk by year 13 student Voke from TEDxYOUTH@BSN titled A World without Labels.  On Thursday, World Wildlife Fund visited to lead activities on the dangers of plastics in the oceans to wildlife and ecosystems. Friday’s theme was LGBT+ equality and identity, where students spoke about the meaning behind labels, focusing on the flags representing various communities within LGBT+ and celebrating their identities.

Week two began with the topic of mental and physical health and well-being, with focuses on increasing understanding for those living with disabilities, as well as dissolving sigma and starting a positive conversation on mental health. On Thursday, students debated on issues pertaining to gender equality with a moderated discussion and student and staff panel. Finally, the week came to a close with international equality day, where students proudly wore clothing representing their home countries and cultures, brought in special dishes to share with tutor groups, and celebrated the multicultural community at the BSN.

This week is an opportunity for students to get involved in the school community, having a platform to make their voices heard and raise awareness on issues that affect the well-being of all.
