Enterprise Week: Inspiring Young Entrepreneurs

School Event Junior

As teachers, witnessing the opening of eyes to perhaps otherwise unknown talents is what has made this project an overwhelmingly successful one.

The Year 3 through Year 6 students at Junior School Diamanthorst were hard at work during Enterprise Week, which was held from 15 to 19 January.

Assemblies with guest presentations by Gordon Willoughby, CEO of WeTransfer, and Adam Lowmass, Project Manager for Shell, kicked off the week, inspiring students and sharing their expertise on running a successful business. Students were tasked with brainstorming ideas for their own products and services, and in groups developed their businesses, analyzed cost and potential profit margins, created logos and advertisements, pitched their projects and manufactured their products.

To further immerse students in the experience, groups were given a loan from the school to launch their business, which they would pay back after selling their products and services to classmates and parents on Market Day, which was held on 19 January. All profits from Market Day were donated to the Juliana Kinderziekenhuis, and a representative was even able to come to the school and talk to students about how their donation would be used and the impact it would make. This further helped to immerse students in Enterprise Week, as they were able to relate their hard work to real-world benefits.

Opportunities like Enterprise Week at the junior school level are so impactful for students as they help bolster teamwork, creativity and a wide range of skills for life, as well as boost self-confidence and unlock perhaps otherwise unknown talent within students.
